Parks to Visit This Weekend in Columbus, OH

Fall is one of the best seasons to enjoy the outdoors. The temperatures are cool and refreshing, but not freezing, and the leaves change from their vibrant green to warm red and orange colors. While you can experience these changes virtually anywhere in Columbus, there’s nothing quite like taking a stroll through a park in the fall. Quarry Trails

Despite being remarkably close to the center of Columbus, Quarry Trails can make you forget all about the hustle and bustle of the city. Part of the Metro Park system, Quarry Trails is full of vibrant grasslands, waterways, and cliffs. You’ll find paths throughout the park, so you can enjoy extensive hiking and biking opportunities. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, climbing and paddleboarding are also available here, thanks to the sheer number of diverse landscapes and activities.

Scioto Audubon

Scioto Audubon is distinctly an urban park, but that doesn’t make it any less relaxing than its more secluded counterparts. In fact, it’s known for its impressive ability to bring nature to the middle of Ohio’s capital city. It started as a blighted brownfield but has since been transformed into 120 acres of natural wonder with lakes, fields, and walkways. Boat ramps make it easy to bring your boat and venture out into the water. Walkways and biking paths are prevalent and are conveniently just steps away from some of the city’s top attractions.

Three Creeks

On the southern end of Columbus, you can visit Three Creeks. This park is appropriately named, as it’s the point in which the Alum, Big Walnut, and Blacklick creeks all join together. Because of its extensive waterways, it’s a premier spot for birdwatching. Over 100 species of birds frequent the park, including owls and great blue herons. Other wildlife also roams the area, including beavers, deer, and even minks. Throughout the 1,100 acres, you’ll find plenty to do, especially if you’re interested in hiking and fishing.

Sharon Woods

If you find yourself in Columbus during the fall, consider visiting Sharon Woods. This forested area is home to countless towering hickory, beech, and oak trees that sport fiery colors evoking a warm feeling even in the chill of the fall season. The trees are among the many features offered here, as this park is also home to Schrock Lake. Spanning 11 acres, the lake is suitable for fishing, boating, or simply taking in the stunning view of the colorful trees reflecting off the still surface.
